Lighting consumes an astonishing 19% of the world’s electricity generation. The resulting CO2 is equivalent to 70% of global emissions from passenger vehicles and is three times more than emissions from aviation*. In many buildings lighting accounts for 40% or more of electricity costs. Air conditioning has an even larger impact. Investments in efficiency improvements in these areas make a lot of sense (here is an interesting McKinsey article about it).
